The importance of dental professionalism
It’s crucial that when you are selecting a dental professional, you choose just that – a trusted professional. So what sort of things should you be looking for?
Dentistry today is a state of the art high tech business and requires years of study in the latest techniques before a dentist can start their profession working with the public.
Science has helped to develop equipment so sophisticated that the dentists of yesterday would have no idea how to utilise this equipment.
It then goes hand in hand that the dentist you choose has the access to and the training of how to use this equipment to best suit the needs of the patient. Click the link below to explore 6 steps to identifying a true dental professional:
The anxious patient
Let’s face it, a trip to the Dentist can raise the blood pressure for all of us and for some of us it can cause real anxiety. To these people, a trip to the dentist causes as much fear as swimming with hungry sharks!
This is why many people put off dental appointment for months or even years. It may be a daunting task due to previous painful incidents, bad childhood experiences or extreme discomfort during procedures.
We understand your fears and have gone to great lengths to deliver pain free dentistry to our patients – there is no longer an excuse for putting off coming to the dentist!
Anxiety about dental procedures is the main reason why people put off going to the dentist, sometimes even when they need it most!
Putting up with the pain and discomfort of a broken or damaged tooth can sometimes appear better than going to a dentist to cure that pain.
Thankfully with the use of Nitrous Oxide or ‘Happy Gas’ the pain of dentistry is all but gone. As with any medication, Nitrous Oxide has to be responsibly administered and the patient is carefully monitored throughout the entire procedure.
Conscious sedation is the use of a combination of medicines, a sedative to help you relax and an anaesthetic to block out the pain and discomfort of a dental procedure. The medications used for conscious sedation are administered by a certified and fully trained anaesthetist.
Check with your health fund as you may be covered for this procedure.
The great thing about conscious sedation is that you will be able to stay awake during the procedure but not be able to speak (Not just because you have a mouth full of dental equipment!), recover very quickly and be able to return to your daily activities with limited or no memory of what you have just experienced in the dental chair.
This is wonderful for patients who experience anxiety going to the dentist.
The dental wand
Dentists are not magicians although the name of this piece of equipment implies that it has some magical properties. In fact, The Wand produces such great results, patients believe that this takes away all of reasons why they shouldn’t visit the dentist.
We have invested in the latest technology to guarantee a slow, steady injection without the sting. The magic behind this wand is that it is computer controlled and is so light that it allows the operator to rotate it for precise movement to carefully and safely glide into the gum tissue.
The Wand is a computer controlled injection of local anaesthesia specifically designed to reduce the discomfort of an injection by slowly injecting the anaesthetic into the mouth. It is an alternative to a syringe offering greater comfort for the patient and great reduction in anxiety.
Another benefit of The Wand is that because it is an accurate delivery system to the area required there is less collateral numbness.
Needle-free injections from INJEX.
As the title suggests, adults and children alike can have safe, needle-free injections as part of your treatment. This means there is no pain and the numbness wears off quickly after you’ve left the clinic. Better yet, this system is much quicker than a regular injection so you can be in and out before you know it.
Around 20% of people suffer from needle phobia. The needle-free injection system eliminates needles and the pain and phobia associated with it. It can be used to inject insulin for diabetes, dental and other anesthesia.
Simply put, there are no needles. No sharp objects. If you’re afraid of needles, you won’t have to fear with the needle free injection system.
Laser dentistry enables practitioners to manage soft tissue procedures in a clinically effective manner producing results which are generally more predictable reducing patient post-op pain and discomfort.
We use the Picasso Lite Dental Laser, the latest state of the art technology in the surgery and the results have been amazing.
Using the laser consistently enables the practitioner to administer fewer local anesthesias which are better all around for both dentist and patient.
Lasers can be used effectively and efficiently on various soft tissue procedures. Laser Dentistry has rapidly emerged with a new level of quality care for patients.
Features like the ability to perform more procedures in less time without sacrificing patient care and comfort are an added advantage. A wide range of dental practice specialties and their patients benefit from laser treatment.
Patients report that laser treatments are much gentler than those administered with an electrosurge and result in little or no recession, swelling, less necrosis, and a quicker post-op healing process.
Additionally, laser surgery is substantially less invasive therefore generates less bleeding during the procedure. Lasers are predictable, precise and produce a reduction in the need for suturing.
Ultrasonics in dentistry is the use of high intensity and focussed sound waves which can be pinpointed to work on soft tissue without damage to the surrounding tissues. The instrument we use is known as the Piezotome Solo integrates the most powerful, reliable and safe components dedicated to ultrasonic pre-implant surgery.
This wonderful device offers greater comfort for both patient and practitioner with a secure and effortless cut, better tactile sense and reduced post operative pain.
Piezo-ultrasonic surgery offers non-traumatic surgery with ease and an almost blood-free operative field. Some additional benefits include faster healing with significantly less swelling, pain and complications.
Ultrasonics like the Piezotome Solo induce a more rapid onset of healing and faster healing.
No more gagging
Interestingly, another reason why people are anxious about going to the dentist is that they are afraid of gagging during procedures. This is especially true when impressions are being made of the mouth using the soft impression material which hardens in the mouth after a few minutes.
Many people find this the most uncomfortable part of the visit to the dentist. We are eager to make every aspect of the interventions we offer our patients as pain-free and straight-forward as possible, which is why we’ve invested in the Carestream CS3600 Intraoral Scanner.
A hi-tech alternative to traditional impressions, the scanner works by taking a series of videos and still images which together form a high-quality image of the patient’s mouth.
Sent to laboratories that make dental implants and similar, the images can be used instead of impressions to create accurate, high-quality orthodontic and dental solutions.
One of the main benefits for our patients is the enhanced comfort which the scanner brings. There’s no need to have impressions made – your dentist will simply use the scanner to take pictures of the existing teeth, enabling the lab to build suitable braces, implants or other interventions.
The scanner offers excellent accuracy and is completely non-invasive. Because the information obtained by the scanner is transferred digitally, images can be rapidly sent to the lab for initial consideration.
No more waiting around for weeks for your treatment to move forward. The scanner doesn’t use X-rays; it also doesn’t use cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Simply by taking appropriate imagery, the Carestream can create a virtual reconstruction of your mouth that’s often perceived to be better than the one clinicians can obtain from taking impressions.
